Alec Wright #40 CEV Spanish 125GP championship 2008 – Round 1

ROUND 1 VALENCIA

“A superb debut for Alec with Team Repli-Cast UK in the first round of the Spanish CEV”

Alec Wright & Repli-Cast UK Racing have taken their first steps into the Spanish CEV championship with rider Alec Wright – and what steps they were!

The CEV is the most competitive 125cc championship outside of MotoGP, with all three of the British riders currently enjoying great success on the world 125cc stage having raced in the Spanish series. The level of competition is so high that just to qualify on the grid is an achievement, and that was exactly Alec and the team’s goal for the weekend.

The strong winds on both Fridays practice sessions caused all the riders problems, that added to the occasional spits of rain in the air and it certainly wasn’t ideal learning conditions for Alec or the team. Thankfully for Saturday the conditions were better, and the final tweaks to the bike were made for the qualifying sessions. Due to the amount of entrants the qualifying is split into two groups, the Repli-Cast Honda was out in the first. This left an anxious wait for the results of the second group to be able to ascertain if Alec had made the grid, but there was no need to be worried as he ended up over half a second clear and took to the Grid on row 9.

Race day saw the team wake to a wet start, with a changeable forecast though it gave a good chance to dial the bike to a wet set up in the morning warm up. Come the race start though the skies had cleared and the track was dry, and a good start by Alec saw him gain several places into the first corner. He then came across a group of riders that he was able to keep pace with for the rest of the race, the bunch swapping positions every corner. They eventually crossed the line after 18 laps with tenths of a second between them, Alec visibly pleased with his result. Not only did he qualify for the grid, but a superb race saw him finish in 25th position, a great result from a grid with 40 riders on it.

The fact that this race weekend was the first time he had ever ridden the Valencia race track was testament to his and the teams hard work over the weekend, getting faster every time out, and certainly not being helped by some inclement weather for some of the sessions.

Alec’s Repli-Cast Honda was not outdone by the other machinery in the CEV either, in fact finishing the race less than 1 second in front of Alec was one of the Stop & Go Honda’s, a team that also run in MotoGP. A superb debut for Alec with Team Repli-Cast UK in the first round of the CEV!

The next round sees the series move to The Circuit of Catalunya on May 25th, a track the rider and team have knowledge of after competing in a warm up race there earlier this year, beating the great results from Valencia will be the target for the weekend.
