Baptism of fire at Thruxton – Jay Dunn
This was to be Jay’s first real test under race conditions at the fastest circuit in the country where horsepower rules!! With intermittent weather during qualifying, Jay struggled to get to grips with the long, fast, abrasive track.
He only just managed to qualify in fortieth position in the dying seconds of the last lap which ended up being a real wakeup call for all concerned. The end result was Jay started on the grid dead last for the coming race.
By the end of the first couple of laps, Jay had blitzed his way to a very respectable 20th position but then had a few seconds gap to reach the next machine in front. He fought hard to close the gap, only for the race to be red flagged at lap ten.
JAY’S COMMENTS.
I felt lucky initially to even be on the grid after a pretty poor qualifying but after making changes to the set up the bike felt and rode a lot better. I tried my level best out there to make up places and past a lot of riders in the initial laps. Unfortunately I ran out of laps due to the red flag but felt confident enough to maybe get in the points, but at the end of the day I have to be happy with the result I achieved.
STEVE’S COMMENTS.
Initially the team were worried that the boy wouldn’t qualify, but after a gentle (not) talking to when he pitted, fair play to Jay he went out and did qualify, just!! During the race though we had to take our hats off to the boy he set off like a man possessed!! And Jay did the business to achieve a solid 20th position in his first real race of the series. I know he will do better at the next round.
