BMW set to unleash the S1000RR on World Superbikes

BMW have officially unveiled its entry into next year’s World Superbike Championship - the S1000RR, with the company’s chief stating that he wants to get into the top 10 in its debut year.
BMW has set ambitious targets for the race bike, looking to be a consistent top-10 finisher in 2009 with a two-man team comprising one experienced rider, and one young-gun.
The road-going version is due to feature traction control, and BMW is working towards a target weight of 190kg, and power of 190bhp. Initial price estimates for the road bike are around the £10,000 mark.
BMW Motorrad general director Hendrik von Kuenheim said in a press conference earlier:
We are confident that we will be able to start the Superbike World Championship next year with a convincing all-round package, and that our road motorcycle will be just as convincing.
Naturally, we will have to go through a certain process of learning which is precisely why we have set ourselves realistic targets for the time being: In our first year in the Superbike World Championship we seek to bring home several places in the Top 10 and to consistently close the gap to the top teams. In year 2 we plan to catch up with the top teams and to win our first places on the podium. And our medium-term objective, obviously, is to win the World Championship!
