Race report from National Junior Superstock rider Jay Dunn.
Fortunately, the weather was better at Anglesey, very strong wind and wet-ish on Saturday and Sunday, but sunny on Monday.
Qualifying
We had entered in both the powerbike class and the SS600 class and had to do both qualifying sessions in the morning,
and due to destroying 3 rear tyres over the past 2 test days we had to do the qualifying on used tyres, but this did not stop me qualifying 2nd in the powerbikes and 1st in the SS600.
Powerbikes race 1
Hidden within our garage we had a set of slick tyres that I wanted to use in the Powerbikes, so we whipped them on and went for the race, I went off the line in second place and held it to the back straight were I was inevitably passed by an R1, and gapped, but I broke late and stuck onto the front runners.
I could see the almost silly agression in the two riders, and so I took a step back to watch and wait for my chance, my chance came 3 corners later where they both collided and handed me the lead, so i got my head down pulling a small gap before the race was red flagged. The re-start saw me on pole and the race dropped to 6 laps, I went for it and pulled a 2 second lead by lap 3, BUT, due to the stoppage, a cloud had gone right over the circuit and it started to rain, and being on slicks, i had to ride defensive and gingerly. On the last lap I was passed on the back straight by a GSXR1000, but with the red mist I passed him back Immediately on the brakes and held it to the line, very lucky because the rain started pouring down when we finished.
SS600 race 1
Having no tryes left we had to buy a brand new set of Metzeler’s for this race, and lack of time saw me go to pole with minimal heat in my tyres, a ginger warm up lap to scrub them in just wasnt enough and I was dropped to second on lap 1 of the race by my fellow superstock rider Jonathan Lodge. When those tyres warmed up I slotted back into the lead and pulled open a 2.5 second gap which I held to the finish line.
Powerbike race 2
Winning the 1st race set me pole for this one but I knew I had my work cut out with Jonni going faster with every race, I held the lead until lap 5 when he came through on the back straight using the renowned power of the Yamaha R6, we had a close elbow to elbow battle up to a back marker were I made my move into the lead and held it to the line for victory number 3.
SS600 race 2
A new tyre again for the last race where winning was the only option, off the start a surprising kwak (Kawasaki) of Walker (a veteran of this club) took the lead, knowing I wanted to get through he took tight lines making it hard to pass for a lap, and when I overlooked the situation I just went for it right around the outside down into the corkscrew. From then on it was a qualifying session, braking the lap record 3 times in a row, eventually setting a 1.11.5, I held the lead and won the race, but with Jonni passing Walker and chasing me, the last lap saw him take the lap record away with a 1.11.25, a bit of a dissapointment, but one fast lap doesnt win a race, and the quadruple win was mine!
Thanks to my dad for taking me there (watch your head), Arron Haywood my mate for sticking it out (MY F*****G FEET), ridgey for setting the rear shock, (Cummon weres the brewing tackle) and stu for mentoring me ( Theres only 1) thanks a bunch guys. Jay
