Danny Marston

I stared racing in 2007, having always wanted to race but never being able to afford it untill i got a decent job, I saved for all of 2006 and went out and bought a 2000 Yamaha R6. I went into 2007 with not much knowledge of the bike, tracks or my own racing ability.
The first race at Croft I stared 24th on the grid and by the end of the first lap I had made 10 places up, the last few laps race however the rear tyre was moving in every corner. The part worn tyes that i had purchased from another rider were at the end of their life, but I still managed to finish a respectable 8th place, but finishing as the first novice. The second race the tyre’s were not holding at all and every corner was a battle to stay upright. I finished the race with a hard fought 13th, I was fuming with the result so a family member took me to the Metzeller truck and bought me a new set of Racetechs.

The next race on the Sunday began as a big improvement as i made it up to 4th place however on the last lap I was determined to take 3rd and went too hot in complex 1 and lost the rear, having the first crash of my career which wrecked my bike leaving me having to borrow money to get it race worthy for the next race.
Following the crash I had lost confidence in the bike and tyre grip and the next few meetings were a struggle, I couldnt understand why the bike wouldn’t turn and hold a line in a corner, until i spoke to a friend that used to race a 2000 r6 and he told me to alter the fork height, this was the first time I had altered suspension. The next race saw me straight back into the top 10 again, the smile was back on my face and i went on to win the Derby Phoenix PI 600 novice championship with one round to spare.
For 2008 I am riding the same bike in the same class of the Derby Phoneix club and, with my knowledge of the bike and tracks, I can now just concentrate on getting my times down and looking to do well in the main championship.
