Alex Gault, the 17 year old motorcycle racer from Carluke, Scotland had an encouraging start to this years campaign when the British Super Bike Championship revved into action at Thruxton; the Circuit near Andover in Hampshire this weekend after the initial round had been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions at Brands Hatch two weeks ago.

Gault is contending two Championships at these events ‘The National Super Stock 600 Championship’ and ‘The KTM Super Duke Battle’

It was the latter that took to track first and although the youngster has had very little time aboard the Big V twin KTM motorcycle, he proceeded to post respectable times in Free Practice and timed Qualifying for Sundays race. In the race itself, Gault found himself in a very exciting battle for 3rd place which continued for the whole of the 12 lap race, when at the last corner of the last lap, while Alex was holding third position, a coming together with another rider saw both leave the circuit and go onto the grass. Both riders managed to recover with Gault crossing the finishing line in 5th position.

In the National Super Stock 600 Championship the excitement continued, this newly reintroduced class it is hoped will nurture Britain’s young racing talent, and has been an overwhelming success so far, well over subscribed from the 56 entries only 40 would make it onto the grid for Sundays race. Despite difficulties in the Fridays Free practice, Gault managed to secure 14th position from the 56 racers in Q2 for the race. It turned out to be an other exhilarating one, where again Alex found himself battling for his position. Programmed for 14 laps it was cut short on lap 10 when Red flags came out for safety reasons after a rider crashed out at Cobb Corner, Alex was a little disappointed as he had planned to push in the last 4 laps confident of moving a few more places up the leader board. As it happened he had to settle for 9th place.

That has been a fairly decent start, I’m glad to be racing again and get the Thruxton round behind me, it is a track I have very little time at but I really enjoyed the weekend I had two really good races, thanks to every one who helped out

The British Super Bike Championship moves to Oulton Park in Cheshire on the 4/5/6th May where the story continues!
