2003: I began racing minimoto’s around the mid season, in my first ever race I came joint 3rd, I knew this was my sport. I gained more and more experience throughout this half year to set myself up for a full season in 2004.
2004: This season I moved onto a geared motorcycle along side MiniMoto racing. At the start of the year I won lots of minimoto races and I realised that it was time to move on completely, so we sold it and focused on the latest machine, a 50cc Conti RX356 v2 which I raced in the Conti cup UK. With one race win and many podiums I ended the Conti season in 2nd place. For the second half of the season I was offered a ride on an 80cc Jawa, a brand new machine that I was testing for development etc. This gave me lots of confidence and I was lent an Aprilla RS 125 on which I had many race wins, in one being 1 tenth of a second, off a lap record.

2005: I moved onto a 1997 Honda RS 125 for this year, as our plan was to move up to British GP 125 series in 2006. I competed in the EMRA championship, Preston and District MCC / JRA and the renowned MRO power bike championship. Due to overlapping dates, I had to miss 2 rounds of each championship, due to a chain snap on the start of the last EMRA event, I was denied of a championship win, despite an overall 30 wins, 3 second places, 2 third place finishes, and 2 lap records. A great year and very confidence boosting. However, due to unforseen circumstances, my dreams of the BSB GP 125 class for 2006 vanished and we had to find an other place to pursue my career.
2006: This was my first year on a 600 at the age of 16, running in the ACU star championship finishing with a very respectable 4th place Along side some very respected opposition.I competed in many other club rounds gaining valuable experience and managed to win 5 races over the season, many top 5 finishes and pole positions, all accomplished on a completly stock machine.

2007: Competed in the gsxr motostar cup. This championship was split into 2 catogories. Under 23s in which i came first by an 80 point margin, and in the overall championship finishing second behind by 9 points, 4 wins 3 2nd’s and 1 dnf, sadly at the dnf round at Croft race circuit i had taken pole by 1.3 seconds and won the sprint race by 8.5 seconds. I also competed in the ACU open clubmans championship on the stock 600 gsxr and managed a 3rd place overall against mainly 1000cc machines.
In the later half of the season i had the oportunity to race at five rounds of the European superstock championship with team rumi azione squadra corse, this series is run alongside the WSBK my best position being 17th place. I also had a run out with the GSXR 750 European Cup at Assen also with WSBK achieving my first world points at my first meeting with11th place.
For 2008 Jay will be competing in the highly competitive British Junior Superstock for Team Howarth Racing on board a Honda CBR600. The team already has main sponsors but are always in need of more, Jay himself needs sponsors and, if any companies etc wish to contact to discuss sponsorship then you can email Jay here or view his website for more information.

This message is to andy downs sorry i dont recognise you, im jays father
thankyou for your comments about jay they are very much appreciated,
hopefully this year we can acheve something really special in the National Junior Superstock Championship if we can raise all the cash that is
£40,000 Hence the idea of The £1.00 Future Stars Fund, it wont help us but it will hep many in the future if we can get enough support.
We have another letter about the fund on jays website and have spoken to 8 Race Clubs from minimoto to MRO,Hottrax Trackdays, Publications IE MCN, RACER MAG and BSN and nobody here can give it a bad word, Jim Parker of ACU said will bring up at next meeting, Silverstone,
Motorsportvision are mulin it over we can make it work if we all pull together.
Many Thanks Steve Dunn Frustrated Father LOL

Good luck this year Jay. I first heard of you at EMRA last year when you won the first 600 race and i won the other one. Wanted to race you in the last race but they cancelled it! Well done on winning the suzuki thing this year, i tried to get the money together to go into that as well but was a grand or 2 short at the time.
Looking forwards to finally racing you next year in jnr superstock. And it does sound a great idea what your trying to set up Steve - hope you get somewhere with it!

Looking at the online lap times it seems you are 3 seconds off the pace, whats wrong with the set up of the bike ?
kind regards
Craig

its just really slow. Being honest, i need to pull my finger out, and push a bit harder, but its hard when your bike is last through the speed trap. JD

Are the rules the same as superstock 1000 ? if so there are several things you can do to give it more grunt were you need it, I have owned and run a national Superstock team in the UK and the States, one thing is definate you start with the setup of the suspension, then once you get confidence to push hard you must alter the drive of the bikes power to were you need it ( ie ) out of the corners, what pipe do you have , suspension , power commander etc, let me know

Craig

hey craig, thanks for the info mate, its running a akraprovic titanium system, with the power commander set up, we have tried 4 different maps, both on dyno and circuit, and although we make progress ie 75% throttle at 10000rpm for smooth drive through eg sheene curve, we cannot make anymore progress on that side. the handling is great and im fully confident, for example, i can do the lap times but in the race i just get mugged on every straight, we have spoken with some people and they have said that wether me or rossi on my bike i will NOT beat the yamaha’s that im up agianst. at oulton i was 8mph down on the high speed and 7bhp down on power, and without a slipper clutch its hard to make up on the brakes, and its dragging me down physically and mentally to have such a dissadvantage.

Must be disheartening to have other bikes with that much more power, keep your head up Jay. I’m hoping to be at Mallory in June and will definately be at Croft so look forward to seeing you racing.

Hi Steve, I havent got the rule book for that class however, i can only assume its the same as the 1000 stock bike, Firstly its inportant your suspension is set up correctly for Jays riding style and weight, there are many in the paddock that say they know but most of it is idle chat and out of desperation you will tend to listen, there is a simple formula/ calculation you can use that works, i will sort the chart for you on my return from Spain in two weeks, the other inportant things are you blue print the engine , and with a Honda you must have the crank balanced, Also the usual thin head gasket , the engine setup for a Honda favours a Micron surpent front pipe, causing back pressure at the outlet on a Honda we have found to be more affective for the punch out of the corners giving it more mid range.
Hope this is of use
Kind Regatds
