Rookie Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo won the Portuguese GP at Estoril from Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa. It was a maiden victory for the 20-year-old Spaniard whose Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi finished third.
Briton James Toseland finished down in seventh as he benefitted from Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden crashing out ahead of him. Toseland’s Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Colin Edwards took fourth spot from John Hopkins on the Kawasaki, while reigning world champion Casey Stoner fought back from early electrical problems to finish sixth.
Jorge Lorenzo, the youngest rider in the MotoGP field, has had an extremely impressive start to his career at the top of motorcycle racing. His record so far reads, 3 races, 3 pole positions, 3 podium finishes and 1 race win, not a bad start!
When the race got underway Valentino Rossi wasted no time in shooting ahead of world championship leader Pedrosa, with Lorenzo also taking advantage - then passing the fellow Fiat Yamaha of Rossi to take the lead by the end of lap one.
Rossi soon struck back, passing Jorge into turn one of lap 2 of 28, and the 20-year-old rookie was demoted back to third position on lap 11 when Pedrosa finally made a move stick into the same corner. The three then battled it out until around lap 15 when the wear on Valentino Rossi’s Bridgestone tyres looked to be slowing him down as the Michelin-shod Pedrosa and Lorenzo pulled away.
Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa now share the lead at the top of the world championships standings, while Jorge Lorenzo has become the youngest ever rider to take three successive podium finishes in the premier-class, beating the previous record by just one day held by…. Dani Pedrosa!
