Sam Coventry – NGRRC 9th & 10th August 2008 – Pembrey Circuit
Arrived for testing on Friday 8th with brilliant sunshine and lovely warm temperatures! Testing went well with both the Honda Gp125cc and the Aprilia 125cc running spot on.
Saturday – awoke to pouring rain, Sam went out for practice on both bikes, came in very happy, fastest F125cc out on track by a second a lap.
Qualifying Race 1 -
Still raining, Sam seemed un-fased (he doesn’t mind the wet- we think it stems from his motocross racing days). Sam was second on the grid (as this is his overall championship position). It was a five rider fight in the first corner, where Sam went round the outside of everyone and into the first place, he stayed in 1st, which put him in pole position for the championship race.
Race 1 – Cancelled due to weather and the hairpin being waterlogged!
Sunday -
We had the cancelled race from Saturday to catch up with first. The track was still greasy but the rain had stopped by now.
Race 1 -
Sam is on pole. He gets an ok start, Sam almost gets pushed onto the grass coming into the hairpin, but manages to keep it on track, then overtakes Row Miller (Sam’s cousin) on the inside of the fourth corner to gain the lead. He then led with quite a gap for the rest of the race while Row and Jed battled it out for 2nd place.
Sam’s pleased as he has gained 4 points on the championship leader, having also been awarded an extra point for fastest lap.
Qualifying Race 2.
Conditions are sunny and Sam is back in second on the grid because hes still second in the championship and this is the qualifying race. He gets a fairly good start and its about seven riders into the hairpin Sam and another rider make contact but are both ok. Ty Jones gets out in front, with Sam hot on his tail for the next 6 laps its close over the finish line but Ty just beats Sam by a couple of hundreths of a second. Sams not too worried as Ty is not a championship contender.
Championship Race 2 -
Sam is second on the grid. He gets a good start but his chasing Ty again. Ty and Sam pull a gap on the rest of the F125cc riders and Ty manages to put a slower 400cc rider in between him and Sam. Sam gets past the 400cc machine in the corners but she manages to gain on him on the straights, this was ultimately slowing Sam up but he road home for a 2nd place, knowing that Ty’s win wasn’t going to effect the championship standings. He’s gained 7 points to close the gap on the championship leader.
Sam also had some great racers on his Honda GP125 machine, against the 250cc, 400cc and 650cc bikes.
He finished 5th in the Louigi Moto Newcomers (first 125cc to cross the line). This was the last round of this championship and Sam has finished 5th in the standings (1st 125cc machine). He is quite pleased with his achievement in this against much larger capacity machines.
He got his best result yet in the Dara Brady open 400cc, coming 5th in the race on Saturday and 12th on Sunday (the bike was mis-firing on Sunday). This leaves him joint 8th place in the championship standings in this one.
Once again big thanks to Unipart Automotive, Reivers Wholesale Ltd, Motodirect, California Superbike School, Mrs Morgan at Purbrook Park School and Grandad (for getting the fuel) – we really apreciate everyones help and support this season so far.
Overall a very productive weekend. We are now looking forward to the next round of Thundersport GB – Aprilia Superteens which brings us back to Pembrey on the 23/24 August.
