Scott Redding
Scott Redding, born 4th January 1993 in Quedgeley, Gloucestershire has a natural talent for road racing that is not often found. In 2001 at the age of eight, at the suggestion of Julian Hayward of Minimoto Racing, who had seen him riding on an indoor circuit, he was entered in a minimoto meeting. Although his pre-race riding on the loaned bike was limited to just the practice and qualifying for race day he finished second in all the four races he rode in.
Scott Redding could well be the first British rider that will will give us the first World Champion in the Premier class of road racing since Barry Sheene in 1977. He has great natural talent but like all young sporting talent finding their way to the top he needs the one thing that is very hard to come by in Britain, sponsorship sufficient to fund his way to the very top.
Despite the fact that in 2006 Scott was just 13 years old, DORNA, the MotoGP organisers and the backing behind the MotoGP Academy, decided that he should ride in the Spanish National 125cc Championship, the CEV125. The Championship is just one step below full Grand Prix level and the riding age is normally restricted to a minimum 14 years but the influence of DORNA is such that it was agreed that Scott should ride at a Catalan regional Championship race and, subject to him showing good ability there, he would be allowed to compete in the CEV.
Scott was duly entered into the Catalan Championship on the the Catalan GP circuit just outside Barcelona. Allowed only to ride a very standard RS125 Honda, not the special bike that he would have to use to be anywhere near competitive in the CEV125, and realising that the worst thing that could happen was a “fall off” Scott rode consistently fast, but safely, to finish in a very creditable 7th place. This ride persuaded the CEV125 organisers that Scott’s ability was well up to him being able to compete in the Championship.
Scott has already been competing at a high level, a level that in 2007 saw him riding successfully at the highest level open to him at his 14 years of age. Scott finished second in the CEV (the Spanish National Championship) just 8 points behind the overall winner 17 year old Stefan Bradl, a rider that has ridden successfully in GPs this year.
For Scott the final five CEV races have seen him finish fourth, second, and, as a finishing flourish, win, win, and win again. For 2008 Scott has signed with BQR Blu-Sens Aprilia to ride in the 125 class of MotoGP when he will be at the minimum required age of 15 years old.
