Fifteen-year-old Scott Redding became the first Briton in 22 years to win a MotoGP race on home tarmac, claiming a thrilling 125cc victory. The last British rider to triumph in a Grand Prix race of any class was Ian McConnachie, who won the 80cc race at Silverstone 22 years ago.
The Blusens Aprilia Junior rider, taking part in just his eighth race at this level, brought Donington Park to its feet, leading the field home by a 5.3-second margin.
Redding spent most of the race in second place behind Italy’s Andrea Iannone, but as the Briton closed in Iannone fell on Craner curves. Redding made a break from the chasing Mike De Meglio and Marc Marquez and began reeling Iannone in, the pressure (and high winds) eventually getting the better of the Italian.
Redding also becomes the youngest rider to win a GP race at 15 and 170 days, beating the previous record of 15 and 324 days set by Marco Melandri in 1998.

To scott and family, some people havnt been aware of you up until now but all of us involved with minimoto, Contis and metrakit knew you were special, youve worked very hard along with dad and uncle pushing all the way for many years now and youve proved as we all suspected you would and now have gone all the way, keep up the good work and effort this win is no less than all of you deserve, and we all know you can go all the way starting with the GP 125 championship 250 then the big one, me and Jay are chuffed to bits as is everyone who consider you a mate. Hope we will be there one day!

I’m proud to say I was there when Scott Redding won his first British GP - a very mature performance. I imagine the last five laps in the lead must have seemed like 20! Cracking race and great to see the Brits starting to come through the GP ranks.
