Casey Stoner’s defence of the MotoGP crown is now firmly back on the rails following his second successive win, this time at the Dutch TT in Assen.
The second half of the 2008 MotoGP World Championship will now start with Dani Pedrosa - who finished second in Assen - back on top of the standings. Rossi began the Dutch round eleven points clear of Pedrosa, but fell on the opening lap, while Stoner - who had been a distant 45 points from Rossi at the start of the event - surged to his second victory in less than a week and third of the season so far. Stoner is now 29 points behind Pedrosa and 25 behind Rossi.
Stoner, who had qualified his Marlboro Ducati in pole position, lost the lead to Dani Pedrosa at the first turn, however by the end of lap one he had regained the lead and began pulling out a gap over the chasing pack to eventually take the victory over 11 seconds ahead of second placed Dani Pedrosa.
Pedrosa’s Repsol Honda tyeam mate Nicky Hayden suffered heart break on the exit to the last turn on the final lap as his pneumatic-valve RCV ran out of fuel robbing him of a podium finish and gifting it to fellow American Colin Edwards.
Valentino Rossi brought his Fiat Yamaha home in 11th place following his fall on lap one, which saw Randy De Puniet taken out too. Rossi, however, was able to remount and give chase eventually passing Marco Melandri (second race in a row that Melandri has been overtaken by a rider that had fallen earlier in the race) and Toni Elias. britain’s James Toseland came in 9th.
